Toledo Mud Hens 1, Norfolk Tides 0 (box)
Drew VerHagen absolutely owned the Tides on Memorial Day. VerHagen walked a pair, but allowed just two hits over seven scoreless innings. Neither team could muster any offense, but in the seventh, Jason Krizan doubled in Dawel Lugo for the eventual game winner. Johnny Barbato picked up his fourth save.
Krizan: 1-2, RBI, BB, 2B
VerHagen (W): 7.0 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 7 SO
Coming Up Next: The Hens will run into a familiar face to Tigers fans on Tuesday. They’ve yet to announce a starter, but Edwin Jackson will take the bump for the Syracuse Chiefs with first pitch set for 6:35pm ET.
Trenton Thunder 6, Erie SeaWolves 5 (box)
Erie built a two-run lead, and Beau Burrows was dominant through six. Unfortunately, Burrows couldn’t record an out in the seventh. Three singles, a walk and a run scored ended Burrows’ night. Trent Szkutnik came into the pressure cooker and allowed a grand slam. The Chiefs tacked on a run in the eighth, allowing them to stave off a three-run bottom of the ninth for the SeaWolves. It was A.J. Simcox smacking a three-run shot in the ninth to provide the best part of the offense for the day. Troy Montgomery had a two-hit game in the losing effort.
Simcox: 2-4, R, 4 RBI, HR, 2 SO
Burrows (L): 6.0 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, BB, 4 SO
Coming Up Next: The Binghamton Rumble Ponies come to town on Tuesday for a 6:05pm ET start. No starters are announced.
Lakeland Flying Tigers
The Flying Tigers were idle on Monday. They’ll head to Tampa on Tuesday with Anthony Castro taking on the Tarpons Nick Green.
West Michigan Whitecaps 6, South Bend Cubs 2 (box)
After a few outings with better control, Matt Manning was very wild again on Monday. He only allowed two hits and a run, but he walked five and struck out five in just four innings of work. Felix Viloria and Burris Warner allowed a run in five innings to preserve the lead the Whitecaps built in the middle innings. Jordan Pearce and Reynaldo Rivera had RBI singles in the third inning. Rivera singled in a run in the fifth as well. Colby Bortles had a pair of doubles, while Joey Morgan added a pair of hits and scored two runs.
Bortles: 2-4, 2 2B, BB, SO
Rivera: 2-4, 2 RBI, BB, 2 SO
Manning: 4.0 IP, ER, 2 H, 5 BB, 5 SO
Coming Up Next: The Whitecaps send Elvin Rodriguez to take on the Dayton Dragons and the electric Hunter Greene at 7:00pm ET.
