Tigers prospects Anthony Castro and Elvin Rodriguez spun gems, Christin Stewart homered

Scores, news, and notes from around the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Tuesday, May 20, 2018.

Syracuse Chiefs 10, Toledo Mud Hens 2 (box)

A.J. Ladwig was rocked on Tuesday, surrendering eight runs in just four innings of work. Meanwhile, former Tiger Edwin Jackson handled the Hens lineup without much trouble. Things started off well. Christin Stewart crunched a solo shot in the first inning for his 13th bomb of the season. From that point on, they managed some traffic on the basepaths but could manage just a late run. Dawel Lugo, Mikie Mahtook and Stewart each had two-hit games.

Stewart: 2-4, HR, R, RBI
Lugo: 2-4, 2B
Ladwig (L): 4.0 IP, 11 H, 8 ER, BB, SO

Coming up next: Josh Turley gets the call Wednesday morning to battle the Chiefs’ Cesar Vargas with first pitch set for 10:30 a.m. ET.

Binghamton Rumble Ponies 2, Erie SeaWolves 1 (box)

Sandy Baez was excellent on Tuesday, but his offense couldn’t get much going. Baez allowed a pair of runs in the first, but dominated the rest of the way. He punched out seven, allowing just two hits and a walk over seven innings. John Schreiber and Caleb Thielbar held the Ponies in the late innings, but the SeaWolves couldn’t manage the comeback.

Simcox: 2-3, R
Lester: 1-3, 3B, BB
Baez (L): 7.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, BB, 7 SO

Lakeland Flying Tigers 5, Tampa Tarpons 1 (F/7) (box)

Anthony Castro spun a gem in this one. He punched out eight, allowing one run on six hits. His offense did the rest. Danny Pinero and Cam Gibson each homered in the seventh inning to blow this one open. Zac Shepherd had a pair of hits and scored two runs as the Flygers rolled.

Gibson: 1-4, R, 4 RBI, BB
Hill: 1-1, R, BB
Castro (W): 7.0 IP, 6 H, ER, 8 SO

Lakeland Flying Tigers 6, Tampa Tarpons 3 (F/7) (box)

The Flygers jumped on Tampa for four runs in the first two innings in this one. Derek Hill cracked a three-run shot, his second of the year, in the second inning to provide the eventual margin of victory. Luke Burch chipped in with a pair of RBI as well. Meanwhile, Eudis Idrogo was knocked around a bit over his four innings of work. He surrendered all three Tarpons runs. Strong relief work from Alfred Gutierrez, Fernando Perez and Eduardo Jimenez closed the door.

Hill: 1-2, HR, R, 3 RBI
Gibson: 1-4, 2 R, SO, 2 SB
Idrogo: 4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 SO

Coming up next: Lakeland sits at 26-22 after the doubleheader sweep. Tom de Blok will look to right the ship against the Tarpons’ Will Carter on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.

Dayton Dragons 2, West Michigan Whitecaps 1 (box)

Jordan Pearce launched a solo shot in the fourth to give the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead, but the pitching didn’t hold up late, spoiling a brilliant outing from Elvin Rodriguez, who continues to impress. Rodriguez struck out 12 Dragons in seven innings of work. Unfortunately, he allowed a solo home run in the seventh before departing, which tied things at 1-1. Oswaldo Castillo leaked a run in the eighth, and that was all she wrote for the ‘Caps in this one.

Pearce: 2-4, HR, R, RBI, SO
Morgan: 1-3, BB, SO
Rodriguez: 7.0 IP, 3 H, ER, 12 SO

Coming up next: Jesus Rodriguez will take on the Dragons’ Andrew Jordan on Wednesday evening.
