Spencer Turnbull strikes out six as SeaWolves win

Scores, news and notes from around the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Tuesday, May 9, 2018.

Toledo Mud Hens 2, Columbus Clippers 0 (box)

The trend toward dominant strikeout performances by Mud Hens starters continued on Tuesday. Drew VerHagen threw four perfect innings, striking out eight of the twelve batters he faced. The bullpen took over from there and while the Clippers eventually managed some baserunners, they couldn’t push anyone across home plate. Dawel Lugo drove in Mikie Mahtook in the third inning for what would prove to be the game winning run. Ronny Rodriguez added a solo shot in the seventh for insurance.

Mahtook: 3-4, R, 2B

Ladwig (W): 3.0 IP, 5 H, BB, SO

Coming Up Next: The Mud Hens will look to run their record to 20-11 tonight as Josh Turley takes on the Clippers at 6:35pm ET.

Erie SeaWolves 3, Harrisburg Senators 0 (box)

Spencer Turnbull spun a gem for the SeaWolves on Tuesday. He went six innings, allowing just a pair of hits while punching out six batters. On offense, Jake Rogers had a pair of hits and scored a run. Jake Robson, Will Maddox and Gabriel Quintana had the SeaWolves’ RBI for the evening. Zac Houston and Kyle Dowdy cleaned up the final three innings in relief of Turnbull, with Dowdy picking up a six out save.

Coming Up Next: Kyle Funkhouser takes on the Senators Jefry Rodriguez at 11:00am ET on Wednesday.

Clearwater Threshers 2, Lakeland Flying Tigers 1 (box)

Anthony Castro got things back on track with six innings of shutout ball on Tuesday, but Eduardo Jimenez leaked a pair of runs late to lose this one. The offense didn’t give the pitching staff a lot of help. Jose Azocar knocked in Danny Pinero for their only run, and overall the Flygers were limited to just five hits.

Pinero: 2-3, R, 2B, BB, SO

Castro: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 5 SO

Coming Up Next: The 13-18 Flying Tigers will lock up with the Threshers again at 6:30pm ET on Wednesday. No starters have been announced.

Clinton LumberKings 13, West Michigan Whitecaps 1 (box)

Elvin Rodriguez started this one and was clobbered for five runs in three innings. It went even worse for Clate Schmidt in relief. He didn’t even last three innings, giving up seven more runs as the LumberKings routed the Whitecaps. Reynaldo Rivera had another hit on Tuesday, but otherwise this one is best forgotten. Quickly.

Rodriguez (L): 3.0 IP, 5 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, SO

Coming Up Next: The Caps and Kings will start at noon on Wednesday. Matt Manning will take on Michigan native Oliver Jaskie.
