Dane Myers’ solid outing salvages a doubleheader split for West Michigan

Norfolk Tides 7, Toledo Mud Hens 2 (box)

The Tides blew up A.J. Ladwig with a five-run third inning and rolled to victory on Saturday. Caleb Thielbar gave up a run in three innings of relief, while Zac Houston pitched a clean ninth. Chad Huffman had two hits and scored a run, while Mike Gerber doubled and Edwin Espinal had an RBI with a single and a walk.

Huffman: 2-4, R, SO

Ladwig (L): 5.0 IP 6 ER, 6 H, 2 HR, 3 SO

Coming Up Next: The Tides will take a crack at sweeping the Hens at home on Sunday at 4:05pm ET.

Reading Fightin Phils 8, Erie SeaWolves 5 (box)

Sandy Baez struggled in his first outing since his brief call-up to Detroit. He went just 3 23 innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, including three home runs allowed. The SeaWolves put together a four-run third inning to get back into it, but attempts at a comeback fizzled the rest of the way.

Maddox: 1-3, 2 R, BB

Scivicque: 2-3, BB

Baez (L): 3.2 IP, 7 R, 5 ER, 8 H, BB, 5 SO

Lakeland Flying Tigers 1, St. Lucie Mets 0 (box)

The Flying Tigers got brilliant pitching on Saturday. Alfred Gutierrez spun five no-hit innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Burris Warner kept it going, allowing four hits in three innings of relief with three strikeouts. Isaac Paredes had two hits, and scored the game’s only run in the seventh inning on a Troy Montgomery single. Derek Hill doubled in this one. Eduardo Jimenez picked up his tenth save.

Paredes: 2-3, R, SO

Hill: 1-3, 2B

Gutierrez: 5.0 IP, 2 BB, 5 SO

Coming Up Next: The Mets and Flygers will settle this three-game set on Sunday at 1:00pm ET.

South Bend Cubs 5, West Michigan Whitecaps 3 (Gm 1)(F/7)(box)

Clate Schmidt made it four innings, allowing two runs, but then Max Green got hit up in 2 13 innings of relief, allowing another three. Down in the seventh and final inning, Brady Policelli drew a bases loaded walk to plate the first Whitecaps’ run. Colby Bortles came through with a single that scored two runs to make it 5-3, but the rally burned out from there.

Bortles: 1-3, 2 RBI, BB, 2 SO

Peterson: 1-3, R, 2B, BB

Schmidt (L): 4.0 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 4 SO

West Michigan Whitecaps 6, South Bend Cubs 1 (Gm 2)(F/7)(box)

Dane Myers gave up a run in the first inning, and then settled into a fine outing. He went 5 23 innings, allowing four hits and two walks against five strikeouts. Colby Bortles had two hits and drove in three runs in this one. Jose Azocar is swinging a bit of a hot bat, racking up another two hits and scoring a pair of runs. Rey Rivera doubled and drove in a pair of runs.

Bortles: 2-3, R, 3 RBI

Rosa: 1-3, R, RBI, SO

Myers (W): 5.2 IP, ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 SO
