Tigers prospect Isaac Paredes homers in Flying Tigers romp

Dawel Lugo went 1-for-2 in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday. Chad Huffman was 0-for-4 in the designated hitter spot the day after winning the Home Run Derby on Tuesday. The Pacific Coast League All-Stars won 12-7 over the International League. The Hens will put their half-game lead over the Indianapolis Indians on the line on Friday as they travel to Indiana for three games. Jacob Turner will take on Alex McRae at 7:15 p.m. ET.

Erie SeaWolves

It wasn’t a terribly auspicious Eastern League All-Star Game for the SeaWolves on Wednesday. Beau Burrows allowed two earned runs in collecting just two outs, and Kyle Funkhouser allowed a run as well as the East and West All-Stars played to a 4-4 tie. Danny Woodrow had a single, while Will Maddox went 0-for-2 in the game. The SeaWolves will welcome in Altoona on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. ET.

Lakeland Flying Tigers 15, Bradenton Marauders 3 (box)

Matt Manning’s second start for the Flygers went reasonably well despite a steady drizzle through much of his outing. Manning left a fastball down and in to leadoff hitter Adrian Valerio and he deposited it over the left field wall in the first inning. Manning settled in somewhat from there, but his timing was out of whack at times, missing glove side with a seriously cutting fastball. He got squeezed by the home plate umpire quite a bit in the middle innings, but stranded three walks before leaking another run in the fifth on a pair of hard hit balls. Manning settled in again from there to polish off the Marauders, but overall it was a pretty erratic outing.

The offense had plenty of support to offer. Clark Brinkman hit a solo shot in his first at-bat above rookie ball to give the Flying Tigers a 3-1 lead after two. They then erupted for four runs in the fifth, and then five more in the sixth to bury the Marauders. Isaac Paredes led the way with three hits, including a two-run shot in the sixth inning, Paredes’ 10th of the season. Derek Hill doubled, drove in three runs, and also had one caught at the wall in straightaway center.

West Michigan Whitecaps 3, Wisconsin Timber Ratters 2 (F/10) (box)

Elvin Rodriguez pitched a fine game, but lost a two-run lead in the sixth and the Caps had to rally in the 10th to win it. Joey Morgan opened the scoring with his fourth home run of the year in the second inning, and the ‘Caps added another run in the third on a Rey Rivera RBI knock. Rodriguez allowed two runs, but just three hits and three walks, striking out eight across six innings of work. Johan Belisario punched out six in three perfect innings of relief. In extra innings, the Whitecaps loaded the bases and Kody Clemens drew a walk to force home the game winner.

Connecticut Tigers 3, Batavia Muckdogs 1 (box)

Nick Ames cracked a solo shot, doubled, and scored two runs to lead the Tigers’ offense over the Muckdogs. Chance Kirby, the Tigers’ 25th round selection in the 2018 draft, pitched a spectacular game. Kirby went six innings, allowing just a single hit to Batavia while striking out 12 on the night. Designated hitter Jose Alvarado doubled and drove in two runs, while Isrrael De La Cruz and Shane Cooper each chipped in two hits.

Rookie Ball

Wenceel Perez, the switch-hitting Dominican shortstop for GCL Tigers West, continued his fine 2018 campaign with a 4-for-4 game, including a double, on Wednesday. Perez homered twice on Tuesday, and now holds a .980 OPS with 13 strikeouts to 12 walks in 70 at-bats.
