In a move that had been rumored at the trade deadline but did not go through at the time, Mike Fiers has been traded to the Oakland Athletics. In return the Tigers will receive two players to be named later, or cash considerations.
Fiers, would help bolster the Athletics rotation as they make a bid for a wild card spot in the AL West. Thought Fiers was with the Houston Astros last year, he did not play in the postseason.
During his year with the Tigers he has a 3.48 ERA, a 4.66 FIP, and a 1.235 WHIP. All immense improvements over his previous seasons, which is what the Tigers were counting on when they signed him to the short-term deal. His career ERA over eight seasons is 4.06, with a 4.31 FIP and 1.283 WHIP. The signs of life he’s shown in 2018 were enough to garner trade interest, and help the Tigers build for the future, much like they did with last week’s trade of Leonys Martin.
A's claimed Fiers on waivers. Deadline was 1:30 to make deal within 72-hour allowance. Deal was made at 1:28 p.m. Tigers will be picking up two PTBNL -- the cash considerations are always part of the rules on such a trade. Protects against guys on the PTBNL list getting injured.
