In 90 2⁄3 innings so far this year, Detroit’s Daniel Norris has served up 15 home runs. If we extrapolated that to a full 200-inning season... carry the four... where’s my abacus?... 33 home runs. (Does anyone throw 200 innings anymore who isn’t named Verlander? I’ll look that up.)
In 36 1⁄3 innings so far this year, Cleveland starter Adam Plutko has given up 10 home runs. Extrapolate that similarly, and he’d get knocked-around for a Blyleven-esque 55 dingers.
That’s a lot of jogging in counter-clockwise circles, folks.
Norris will give you innings, though: he hasn’t gone less than five in a start since April 14. So that’ll probably tax the bullpen’s soft underbelly less than, say, when Jordan Zimmermann starts these days.
Can we talk about Victor Reyes, though? If you take out the last two games of the Royals series, from July 4 through 12 he slashed .318/.400/.455 in 25 plate appearances. (I know there’s a bit of cherry-picking involved there, but have you seen the Tigers lately?) Couple that with his .806 OPS in Toledo this year, add a couple years of seasoning and simmer, and you could have a valuable lineup piece in a while. Bold prediction: he’ll finish the year batting above .280. You heard it here first.
