Alex Faedo stumbles in a loss to Altoona

Scores, news, and notes from around the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Monday, July 23, 2019.

Toledo Mud Hens (idle)

The Hens are headed to Lehigh Valley where Tim Adleman (3-4, 3.74 ERA) takes on the IronBirds at 7:05pm ET on Tuesday night.

Altoona Curve 4, Erie SeaWolves 1 (box)

Alex Faedo was hit around a bit, and the SeaWolves’ offense misfired on Monday night. Faedo struck out eight in just five innings of work, but gave up a parade of hits in a rough three-run third inning which doomed his outing. The whiffs were there, and Faedo was doing a solid, if still inconsistent, job implementing his higher release point. The fastball was effective particularly when he kept it down. But in the third the Curve just squared him up a few too many times as he struggled to locate. He settled back in a bit in the fourth and fifth but it was a rocky outing overall. The offense scratched out a run in the seventh, but just couldn’t get enough runners into scoring position on the night.

Azocar: 2-4, 2B, SO

Hill: 1-3, BB, SO

Numata: 2-3, 2B, RBI

Faedo (L, 5-6): 5.0 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 8 SO

Coming Up Next: Matt Manning (7-4, 2.81 ERA) gets the ball on Tuesday for the first of a doubleheader with Altoona. He hasn’t exactly been struggling, but more stagnant of late, so it would be nice to see him kick off a nice run to end the season.

Lakeland Flying Tigers (postponed)

The Flying Tigers and the Florida Fire Frogs were rained out on Monday. They’ll look to play two on Country Western Night at Publix Field. Tom de Blok (0-9, 4.24 ERA) will start game one for the home team.

West Michigan Whitecaps 3, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 0 (box)

Brad Bass was masterful and the latter half of the Whitecaps’ lineup got the job done on Monday. Bass defanged the Rattlers for 7 23 innings, allowing four hits and no walks, while mowing down nine on the night. Ulrich Bojarski came through with an RBI single to score Cooper Johnson in the fifth. Those two players were on base again in the seventh when Daniel Reyes doubled to center field, scoring them both and giving the ‘Caps some margin of error. Nick Quintana made yet another error in the contest. It’s getting a bit weird.

Johnson: 1-2, 2B, 2 R, 2 BB, SO

Bojarski: 2-4, R, RBI, SO

Bass (W, 2-2): 7.2 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 9 SO

Coming Up Next: The ‘Caps will finally return from the far side of Lake Michigan and take an off day on Tuesday. Wilkel Hernandez (7-5, 4.14 ERA) welcomes in the Lansing Lugnuts on Wednesday night.

Connecticut Tigers (postponed)

The Connecticut Tigers were also rained out against Brooklyn on Monday. Jack O’Loughlin (1-2, 4.28 ERA) takes on the Staten Island Yankees on Tuesday.
