GameThread: Opening Day (at home)

The 2020 season has been postponed, but we’re not letting that keep us from enjoying Opening Day.

Today is the day baseball fans have been waiting for all winter. Unfortunately, Opening Day has been postponed and there won’t be any live baseball played today. However, with much of the world isolating themselves at home, MLB is attempting to simulate the Opening Day experience by offering fans of every team a game to get excited about. They’re calling the event “Opening Day at home” and the idea is that they’ll be streaming an iconic classic game for all 30 teams throughout the day.

The experience is intended to invite fans to feel a sense of community and unity on a day many were looking forward to, while underscoring the importance of staying home to stop the spread of the coronavirus. There will be one game — a victory, of course – broadcast for each MLB club. Fans will have the chance to enjoy postseason triumphs, spectacular individual feats and more, reliving fond memories while doing their part to keep their communities safe.

For us Tigers fans, they’ve chosen to treat us with Justin Verlander’s first of three (three!) no-hitters. This game was played way back in 2007, when Soulja Boy was on the radio, The Sopranos was on TV, and Justin Verlander was younger than Alex Faedo is now.

Join us as we re-live this glorious moment from Tigers’ history, and stick around as the rest of this event unfolds. Later broadcasts will include Verlander’s most recent no-no (noon), Felix Hernandez’s perfect game (3:30 p.m.), and Clayton Kershaw’s no-hitter (9:00 p.m.). All games will be streamed on MLB.com and their various social media platforms. You can find the full schedule of today’s games here.
