I'm skeptical when I read the headline that says, "Tigers will be buyers in 2022." How? With what capital?
I was so envious of the Dodgers trading four prospects for Trea Turner and Max Scherzer. Both might represent the best at their respective positions in baseball. I'm sure that the Nationals got all that they wanted in terms of prospects, but wow what a haul by the Dodgers.
I love the headline that the Tigers might be willing buyers too, but I don't know how they can be. The price for established top talent is top prospective talent, and I'm hoping that the Tigers keep building their farm system so that the parent team is once again strong.
I suppose there might be some extra top talent, but what seems to be in store? Let's review what the Tigers have and what they might be able to part ways with:
Spencer Torkelson --- NO WAY! NO, NO, NO!
Riley Greene --- FORGET ABOUT IT!
Dillon Dingler --- YA GOT TO BE KIDDING!
Joey Wentz --- NO WAY JOSE!
Ty Madden --- NOPE! NOT GONNA DO IT!
Jacob Jobe --- HA HA HAAAAA! NOT IN YOUR DREAMS!
Colt Keith --- SARANARA! NO WAY, SO HIT THE HIGHWAY!
Gage Workman --- BADDA BING BADDA BOO, SORRY CHARLIE!
Roberto Campos --- NO TODAY, and TWICE NO ON SUNDAY!
Izaac Pacheco --- NIX TO THAT!
Ok, let's maybe look at some real possibilities:
Parker Meadows - a high valued but disappointing prospect so far.
Alex Faedo - maybe if the value they get is good, he's got a decent future but he's not the best of the best we have.
Franklin Perez - if somebody feels lucky.
Eleazer Alfonzo - this guy hits and may have a good future.
Daniel Cabrera - if the price is right.
Jose de la Cruz - gotta think about this.
Bryant Packard - make me an offer I can't refuse.
Adinso Reyes - maybe.
Kody Clemens - Roger that!
Wenceel Perez - hmmmmmm?
Trei Cruz - don't tell ya daddy!
Andre Lipcius - it never gets easy!
Keider Montero - ouch that would hurt!
Alex Lange - maybe...
There might be a lot more pitching too if all of the prospects pan out well. Their value might be sky high too, but I'm hoping that the best of the best can be retained.
What likely would we be looking for? The shortstop position is lingering as a headache. Catching should be set. First I hope is set. Second ought to be set with Paredes moving into the role full time. Third has some question marks but the prospects may provide the answer by 2023. The outfield seems pretty solid with Baddoo, Hill, and Cameron, but again there are lots of prospects in the pipeline. Pitching, I suppose never has enough. That's not a long laundry list.
What if we get a free agent shortstop this winter? I am still pretty interested in Carlos Correa. What more could we want to shop for? Ok, ok, I know there's some people interested in Justin Verlander. Would there really be that much to buy during the summer?
