How would you manage the 40 man roster?

The Tigers have 5 years to hold on to young talent before they have to decide to put it on the 40 man protected roster. This may be trickier to do as some of their best prospects get ready to make the jump.

I'm going to look first at who from 2014 - 7 years ago - the Tigers drafted and should protect on the 40 man roster. A complete list of all their picks can be found at https://detroitjockcity.com/2014/06/07/detroit-tigers-2014-mlb-draft-results/.The players on this list that stand out are: 1st round - Derek Hill, OF, 2nd round - Spencer Turnbull, SP, and 3rd round - Grayson Greiner, C. There are others that are still in the minors, but I don't see them garnering tremendous interest as a Rule 5 pick.

In 2015 - 7 years ago - the Tigers had quite a few picks. Here is a summary you can review https://www.freep.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2015/06/09/detroit-tigers-2015-mlb-draft/28730061/. Still remaining from that draft are 1st round pick, Christin Stewart, OF, 2nd round pick, Tyler Alexander, P, and 13th round pick, Josh Lester, 1/3B. Obviously Alexander needs to make the roster, but the others might not be protected.

In 2016 - 6 years ago - the Tigers' picks can be reviewed at https://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?team_ID=DET&year_ID=2016&draft_type=junreg&query_type=franch_year. Matt Manning tops the list, followed by Kyle Funkhouser, Mark Ecker, Bryan Garcia, Jacob Robson, Daniel Piniero, Zac Houston, Danny Woodrow, Brady Policelli, and many less valuable players to the organization. This list will warrant some careful consideration before the final choices are made.

In 2017 - 5 years ago - the Tigers have some players that might warrant consideration of the 40 man roster based on their development and ability to contribute now. This draft can be reviewed at http://www.thebaseballcube.com/draft/teams/byYear.asp?Y=2017&T=11. One of these names was chosen as a Rule 5 pick, but has been returned to the organization (Will Vest was chosen by the Seattle Mariners to start 2021). The names that continue to warrant watching include: 1st round pick, Alex Faedo, P, 2nd round pick, Reynaldo Rivera, 1B, 4th round pick, Gio Arrieta, P, 5th round pick, Sam McMillan, C, 6th round pick, Dane Myers, P, 7th round pick, Brad Bass, P, 8th round pick, Max Green, P, 11th round pick, Garrett King, P, 12th round pick, Will Vest, P, 13th round pick, Cole Peterson, SS, 18th round pick, Dylan Rosa, OF, 26th round pick, Drew Crosby, P, and 32nd round pick, Drew Carlton, P.

In 2018 - 4 years ago, and they will be exposed for first time to the Rule 5 Draft next off season. This list of picks can be seen at https://www.freep.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2018/06/05/detroit-tigers-picks-2018-mlb-draft-tracker/673832002/. This is quite a list too. Names that are on this list include 1st round pick, Casey Mize, P, 2nd round pick, Parker Meadows, OF, 3rd round pick, Kody Clemens, 2B, 4th round pick, Kingston Liniak, OF, 5th round pick, Adam Wolf, P, 6th round pick, Hugh Smith, P, 7th round pick, Eric de la Rosa, OF, 9th round pick, Tarik Skubal, P, 21st round pick, John Valente, 2B, 25th round pick, Chance Kirby, P, and 26th round pick, Garrett Hill, P. There are a few other names that might garner interest in the draft too.

In 2019 - 3 years ago, their picks are shown at https://www.mlive.com/tigers/2019/06/all-40-players-selected-by-tigers-in-college-heavy-2019-draft.html . This draft has lots of hopefuls, including 1st round pick, Riley Greene, OF, 2nd round pick, Nick Quintana, 3B, 3rd round pick, Andre Lipcius, 3B, 4th round pick, Ryan Kriedler, SS, fifth round pick, Bryant Packard, OF, 6th round pick, Cooper Johnson, C, 7th round pick, Zack Hess, P, round 10 pick, Jake Holton, 1B, round 14 pick, Ted Stuka, P, 19th round pick, Kerry Carpenter, OF, 27th round pick, Beau Brieske, P, 32nd round pick, Jack Dellinger, P, and 33rd round pick, Jimmy Kerr, INF.

In 2020 - 2 years ago, the team's picks can be reviewed at https://www.freep.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2020/06/10/detroit-tigers-mlb-draft-picks-2020/5327814002/. Baseball decided due to Covid-19 to limit the draft to just 5 rounds, but they were noteworthy rounds indeed. The Tigers chose in the 1st round, Spencer Torkelson, 1/3B, then in the 2nd round, Dillan Dingler, C, as a 2nd round competitive balance pick, Daniel Cabrera, OF, in the 3rd round, Trei Cruz, INF, in the 4th round, Gage Workman, 3B/SS, and lastly in the 5th round, Colt Keith, 3B. It might prove to be the only year ever where all the picks eventually make it to the big leagues.

To start 2021 - just this past summer, the team's picks are reviewed at https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2021/07/12/heres-a-list-of-all-the-players-the-detroit-tigers-have-picked-in-the-2021-mlb-draft/. Although it might not be likely that any of these names will be added to the 40 man roster, it's fun to review who might be coming on in the next year or so. Their top pick was Jackson Jobe, P, in the competitive balance round that is considered an extension of the 1st round, Ty Madden, P, was added, then in the 2nd round, Izaac Pacheco, SS/3B, followed in the 3rd round by Dylan Smith, P, in the 4th, Tyler Mattison, P, in the 5th round, Tyler Kohlhepp, P, in the 6th round, Austin Murr, OF, in the 7th round, Brant Hurter, P, in the 8th round, Jordan Marks, P, in the 9th round, Garrett Burhenn, P, and then continuing were a total of 21 players taken.

International signings aren't as fully disclosed, but will come to merit a spot on the 40 man roster too, as they earn it. Others that aren't part of our drafts include C Jake Rogers, C Eric Haase, 1B Miguel Cabrera, 1/2B Jonathan Schoop, Inf Hal Castro, Inf Willi Castro, Inf Isaac Paredes, Inf Niko Goodrum, Inf Zach Short, Inf Jeimer Candelario, OF Robbie Grossman, OF Akil Baddoo, OF Daz Cameron, OF Victor Reyes, 1B Renato Nunez, P Erasmo Ramirez, P Wily Peralta, P Michael Fulmer, P Derek Holland, P Buck Farmer, P Joe Jimenez, P Greg Soto, P Michael del Pozo, P Rony Garcia, P Franklin Perez, P Jose Cisnero, P Jose Urena, P Matt Boyd, P Julio Teheran, P Vladimir Pinto, P Jason Foley, P Mark Leiter, P Drew Hutchison, and C Eleazer Alfonzo.
