Offseason-before trades edition

Well, this season sucks.

That said, lets try to fix the our wonderful team.

I have to make a few assumptions to even do this or I get VERY depressed.

1. Payroll will go up some. It could happen with it being Miggy's last season under a guaranteed contract.

2. Some player will go back to something resembling their career and Tork figures it out.

Team needs, C, 3b, OF, power, OBP, everything hitting.......and honestly, the FA class doesn't look great.

That said, lets get to it and see what we can do.

1. Give Chafin what he wants and don't trade him. He is at 6.5 mill player option for next year, add 2/12 frontloaded to forgo the option. 3/18.5 would be about what he could get on the open market from what the guys at MLBTR seem to think. Front loaded to be easier to offload in season 3 if needed.

2. Give Turner or Bogaerts 7/210-250 with telling them they will not be SS. I still don't believe the Dodgers are going to re-sign Turner, if they were, I think they would have done it in the offseason. Looking at Statcast, neither can play SS as good as Baez. The only way to get value out of Baez is at SS and we need an infielder. I wanted a 3b, but I am not impressed at all with the FA this year at that position. Looking up Schoop, he was actually respectable there 2 years ago for a couple games, and Kreidler is still in the minors. Candy is non-tendered. A cheaper alternative is Brandon Drury, but I don't have the faith in the 1.2 years of him playing well.

3. I struggled with the OF. The way I see it is we need a RH power so I am thinking Mitch Haniger. Injury risk, but has power. This would be a 2/15 with the second year being a player option. Honestly, I am almost thinking Carpenter would be what we need and take a cheap flier on Gallo too. I will add one more alternative, Brandon Nimmo in CF. This would add his amazing OBP to this lineup. I don't see this with the big signing in 2 thought. Also considered Andrew Benintendi. Then looked at his statcast page. I am out on him.

4. 1 Mid-Rotation starter. I would not go here, but the injuries!!! Musgrove, Rodon, and Verlander will all be FA. Rodon's opt out vested the other day and he is still pitching well, Verlander looks like a Cy winner and he might only get 25 million per year, but I expect him to opt out and try for 2. That said, the mid-rotation innings guys are plentiful, I am not going to list them all, and I would wait on this and see who is left in January before I even started looking.

4. I am not paying for Contreras or Vazquez. Take a flier on Zunino regaining his power or Gary Sanchez. Seems like we are out of the days of REALLY good catchers.

So her is a couple Line-up looks.

2b-Turner/Bogaerts

CF-Greene

SS-Baez-move down if needed.

RF-Haniger/Gallo

3b-Schoop

LF-Meadows/Carpenter/Whoever is left

1b-Tork/Haniger

DH-Miggy/Meadows Miggy gets his AB dropped

C-Zunino/Rogers

Rotation-no particular order

E-rod

Skubal

Bassitt-although I see one place has him list as FA this offseason, one has a 19 mill team option.

Turnbull

Manning/Faedo/Hill/Briske

I am not getting into the relievers, lets say same as this year without Fulmer.

Alternative Line-up

CF-Nimmo

RF-Greene

3b-Drury

1b-Tork

LF-Meadows/Carpenter/Whoever is left

2b-Schoop/Keidler

SS-Baez

DH-Miggy/Meadows Miggy gets his AB dropped

C-Zunino/Rogers

All in all, I don't see a fix without a trade and some of the guys we are stuck with turning it around honestly.

After the trade deadline I guess we can look again, but this depressed me.....
