Minor League Recaps 7/4

Toledo, Connecticut and the GCL Tigers all won during yesterday's action. Lakeland did not play due to rain. Continuing his rehab assignment, Matt Tuiasosopo went 1-4 with a double. Jose Valverde also made his first appearance for Toledo after being designated for assignment. Valverde pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Mud Hens. Hernan Perez had a big day for Erie, as he went 3-6 with two doubles and a stolen base.

Triple-A: Toledo Mud Hens (36-53)

W, 7-0 vs. Columbus. Ramon Garcia pitched six scoreless innings in the start for Toledo. The lefty allowed just two hits, while striking out seven batters. Continuing his rehab assignment, Matt Tuiasosopo went 1-4 with a double. Mike Cervenak had a big night and drove in three runs. Jose Valverde pitched a scoreless ninth inning to secure the win for the Mud Hens.

Altoona used an eight-run sixth inning to break the game wide open. Mike Hernandez hit a home run in the losing effort. Hernan Perez was also a bright spot in the loss, as he went 3-6 with two doubles and also stole a base.

West Michigan’s bottom four in the lineup combined seven hits, as Jason King, Jake Stewart and Curt Powell all had multi-hit games. Corey Knebel tossed his sixth consecutive scoreless inning to begin his career.

W, 4-3 vs. Vermont. Vermont’s relief pitcher, Derek Hansen, threw away the ballgame for the Lake Monsters. A Hansen wild pitch plated Duncan McAlpine to knot the game at three apiece in the bottom of the eighth inning. And after Austin Schotts led off the bottom of the ninth with a double, Hansen fielded a sacrifice bunt and threw the ball away on the attempted throw to first base. Schotts came home on the play to give the Tigers a walk-off win.

Jose Zambrano, Samuel Crafort and Orvin Tovar all drove in three runs for the Tigers. Pittsburgh’s first-round selection in this year’s draft, Reese McGuire, made his pro debut and went 4-5 with two doubles and three RBI.
